Excavation & Grading

Site preparation for roads, bridge foundations and facilities using GPS-guided equipment and Terra Lock to create stable, load-bearing surfaces.

Category overview

What this work involves.

Excavation and grading prepares sites for civil construction — roads, bridge foundations, facility pads and haul roads — using GPS-guided equipment and Terra Lock for stable, load-bearing surfaces.

On reclamation work the same crews reshape landscapes to restore natural contours.

Typical scope

  • Mass excavation and grading
  • Road and haul road construction
  • Bridge foundation and facility pads
  • Utility and underground work
  • Asphalt paving
  • Landform reshaping for reclamation

Excavation & Grading

Realignment of US 93 to connect to the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, eliminating dangerous curves and steep grades. Sand Stone participated as a subcontractor.

  • 3.5 miles of US 93 realignment
  • Rock slope excavation and stabilization
  • Desert tortoise habitat protection
  • Environmental controls within Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Challenge

The realignment ran through steep rock terrain adjacent to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, with desert tortoise habitat requiring protection throughout construction.

Solution

Roadway realignment and slope work were sequenced with habitat protection measures and controls that minimized impact on the surrounding recreation area while removing dangerous curves and grades from the route.

Construction process

  1. 01

    Environmental Protection

Desert tortoise habitat protection measures established before construction.

  2. 02

    Excavation

Rock excavation and slope construction through steep canyon terrain.

  3. 03

    Realignment

3.5 miles of US 93 realigned to connect to the new bridge.

  4. 04

    Restoration

Disturbed areas treated and impacts to Lake Mead NRA minimized.

Results

Roadway Realigned
3.5 miles

US 93 connection to the bridge.

Excavation & Grading

Site development for a 50,000 sq ft facility addition plus 15 miles of haul road construction and maintenance using Terralok, Sublok and Dust Lok. Sand Stone participated as a subcontractor.

  • Site development, excavation and grading
  • Utility and underground work
  • Asphalt paving for a 50,000 sq ft facility addition
  • 15 miles of haul road construction and maintenance
  • Terralok, Sublok and Dust Lok applications

Challenge

A working mining operation required both a facility expansion and durable haul roads that could carry heavy equipment while controlling dust and limiting ongoing road maintenance.

Solution

Site development, underground utilities and paving were self-performed for the facility addition, while haul roads were built and maintained with Terralok, Sublok and Dust Lok for cost-effective, environmentally friendly and durable running surfaces.

Construction process

  1. 01

    Site Development

Excavation, grading and utility/underground work for the facility addition.

  2. 02

    Paving

Asphalt paving for the 50,000 sq ft facility addition.

  3. 03

    Haul Roads

15 miles of haul road constructed and maintained.

  4. 04

    Stabilization

Terralok, Sublok and Dust Lok applied for endurance and dust control.
