Visual Mitigation

Landform grading, screening and color treatment that integrate infrastructure into surrounding terrain and satisfy visual resource requirements.

Category overview

What this work involves.

Visual mitigation projects reduce the contrast between built facilities and the surrounding landscape through landform grading, native screening and rock and soil color treatment.

Project entries in this category will document the visual resource requirements applied, the treatments used and the reviewed result.

Typical scope

  • Landform grading and berm sculpting
  • Rock and soil color treatment
  • Native screening and buffer planting
  • Reference panel preparation and agency review support

Realignment of US 93 to connect to the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, eliminating dangerous curves and steep grades. Sand Stone participated as a subcontractor.

  • 3.5 miles of US 93 realignment
  • Rock slope excavation and stabilization
  • Desert tortoise habitat protection
  • Environmental controls within Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Challenge

The realignment ran through steep rock terrain adjacent to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, with desert tortoise habitat requiring protection throughout construction.

Solution

Roadway realignment and slope work were sequenced with habitat protection measures and controls that minimized impact on the surrounding recreation area while removing dangerous curves and grades from the route.
